Benjamin D. Winig | Attorney
Professional Experience
As an attorney in the firm’s Oakland office, Ben represents public agency clients exclusively. His practice focuses on all aspects of municipal law, and he regularly provides general counsel services to city councils, planning commissions, and other public bodies throughout Northern California. Currently, Ben serves as Assistant City Attorney for the Cities of Rohnert Park and Calistoga and acts as Assistant General Counsel to the Livermore-Amador Valley Water Management Agency, a joint powers agency comprised of the cities of Livermore, Pleasanton and the Dublin San Ramon Services District.
Ben’s recent work has focused on the intricacies of election law, ethics and conflicts of interests, land use regulation, fees and taxes, green building standards, records retention, and code enforcement. He frequently advises elected officials on the Public Records Act, the Brown Act, and various First Amendment matters. Ben serves on McDonough’s inaugural Pro Bono Committee and currently represents a Honduran woman seeking asylum in the United States.
Prior to joining McDonough, Ben worked at an immigration law firm in San Francisco. His interests in the interaction between the law and the public sector led him to manage a political campaign in Madison, Wisconsin, research European Union asylum polices with an NGO in Geneva, Switzerland, and study cross-cultural negotiations in Bangkok, Thailand. Most recently, Ben took a leave of absence from the firm to work on the Obama-Biden Campaign in Pennsylvania. Ben speaks Spanish and has traveled, worked, and/or lived in many regions of the world.
